04.19.08 | CORDERO + And The Wiremen CORDERO This powerful, Brooklyn-based quartet is equally at home amongst the New York art rock scene or the vibrant Rock en Español movement. The music is an intoxicating amalgam of shake-your-hips rock and punk-ish abandon, tangled up in sensual Latin rhythms and verses. Rave-ups that effortlessly conjure the angular rawk of Gang of Four spiced with moody, South of the border ballads. With smoky, sultry vocals, group leader and namesake, Ani Cordero, will have you weeping in your drink just as easily as she will snake-charm you out of mourning and straight past the velvet ropes onto the dance floor.
...And The Wiremen perform the songs of former Bee and Flower/Cordero (current Gachupin, Barnes/Becker/Wright Trio) guitarist Lynn Wright. Their music combines images of a gothic Deep South with the rhythms of South America and the grainier elements of barroom jazz and avant-pop. The band features Paul Watson (Sparklehorse, Fred Frith) on Cornet, Chris Michael and Sergio Borrero (Coba, Gachupin) on drums and percussion, Eric Eble on bass, Tim Ward on vocals, and Jon Petrow (Cloudroom, Gachupin) on guitar.

ABOUT UNSCENE:
UNSCENE is a more sophisticated, innovative urban guide that has revolutionized the way we navigate through our urban environs. Since its inception seven years ago, UNSCENE has expanded to 18 areas within 13 cities nationwide. Widely recognized and easily referenced, this concept-driven guide is a more functional and succinct way to explore New York's best neighborhoods. In a society overwhelmed with corporate franchises and strip-mall overgrowth, UNSCENE promotes a more boutique-style sensibility, reminding us that our cities embody a rich sense of individuality. It has filled the void of what people have lived without for years - a more stylized guide of the best kept secrets around town including restaurants, cafes, bars, clothing boutiques, furniture stores, art galleries, salons, etc. Accessible and portable, UNSCENE offers a unique form of concierge services.

02.12.08 | Sonya Vallet and Los Prófugos Galácticos The best kept secret in town…that's what friends call her. When Baltimore native Sonya Vallet improvises in any style people wonder who she gets if from. The cross-cultured quadrilingual eldest of a musical family, she debuted at 17 in her father's quartet opening for jazz master Oscar Peterson as the only woman at the 1st Jazz Festival of Madrid. She worked and studied with the likes of gospel legend Donna Hightower, Brazilian genius Fernando Girão, Japanese diva Monday Michiru, world beat virtuoso Danny Heines, and jazz bass masters Ron Carter and Jimmy Haslip. Sonya has mused with her original poems and compositions to sculpt a unique repertoire for Los Prófugos Galácticos, her new collaboration with pianist Erik Deutsch. The ensemble explores world beat jazz with pop and electronic undertones (think Bebel Gilberto meets Portishead and Joni Mitchell.) The group has begun work on their first record and continues to impress audiences that experience the live show. "My main drive comes from vocal improvisation, but I dabble on piano, percussion, guitar, paint or draw in phases, and I still want to dance!" she says.

02.06.08 | Mark Guiliana's THING + The Tyler Schwartz Group Mark Guiliana's THING
This is the new experimental project led by drummer and composer Mark Guiliana who, according to Modern Drummer magazine, "may well be at the forefront of an exciting new style of drumming."
The Tyler Schwartz Group is a trio of unapologetically talented musicians in their lower twenties, who play at some of the hippest dance clubs in New York City. The TSG uses spontaneous hip-hop beats, fluid harmony, and melodies that make people fall in love faster, all combined at one, to provide an intimate musical and dancing experience that eclipses what most DJ's can accomplish from behind a booth. With that said, The TSG has no problem walking into a club almost exclusivley inhabitied by DJ's and playing smart, exciting, musically deep dance music for hours on end

01.29.08 | NUEVA COLOMBIA w/La Cumbiamba Eneye! La Cumbiamba eneye performs concerts and workshops with traditional instruments from the African Diaspora in Colombia, and with indigenous and European instruments as well. These elements are blended together in the traditional music that developed through the colonial era and continues to evolve. Eneye has the versatility to perform from a quintet format, for reduced space events, up to a 10-piece band format for large events. La Cumbiamba Eneye was created in the summer of 2000 by a group of musicians of caliber who share an enthusiasm for investigating, performing and advancing musical expressions emanating from the mix of African, Native Indian and European cultural contributions in the Americas. The band adopted its denomination of "Cumbiamba" from the cultural vocabulary of the north western Caribbean coast in South America. In Colombia, "Cumbiamba" is a familiar word that denotes an outdoors celebration with live cumbia music, or the bands that perform in such events. La Cumbiamba Eneye evokes this lively athmosphere with every performance, spreading it to multiple cultural venues troughout the city and beyond.

01.23.08 | Anton Sword + Ghost-Wise + Nat Benjamin 8:30 Nat Benjamin (of The Flesh)
9 pm Ghost-Wise
10 pm Anton Sword
"Should you have forgotten what a beautiful ballad is or what a finely crafted good pop song sounds like, Anton Sword has 'A Sentimental Education' ready for you: 11 wonderfully produced songs of melancholy, love and the fleetingness of human existence...dark but tender."
Anton's keyboard and voice are currently joined by Jessica Hallman on cello, Kristofer Widholm on guitar, and Joanna Choy on second voice. And sometimes by drums as well.
Ghost-Wise began as an experiment. After enlisting Jason Binnick on bass, Nathan Halpern on guitar, and Jan Haux on drums, it was clear that the purpose of the Ghost-Wise band was not so much to write about ghosts, but to write with them. All of the songs on the up-coming album reference prior lives, broken pasts, static beings in the universe, and the peripheral effects on a young soul haunted by haunters. The spirits have names! They are loved and wanted! Years later, this reunion has brought them back together…to remember. They are experts in sad story telling.

This month: The Hot 8 Brass Band has been central to New Orleans street music for over a decade. Founded by Bennie Pete in 1995, the band has played in traditional Second Line parades--hosted each Sunday afternoon by a Social Aid and Pleasure Club—ever since. The Hot 8 are famous for playing all day in the sun, then hopping to a club gig and playing through the night. horns.

12.13.07 | PYENG THREADGILL On the heels of this impressive introduction, her latest effort, Of The Air faces up to a tall order. "Sweet Home" was named one of the best debut albums of 2004 by the San Diego Union Tribune and C. Michael Bailey in his review for All About Jazz said, "this very well may be the best recording of 2004 to come my way". Pyeng, however, is confident that her penchant for simultaneously reaching forward and back will once again achieve her goal to incorporate music of the past with contemporary music: African American traditionals/spirituals, the avant garde and her own modern alternative experience in punk, R&B and soul. Of The Air (the meaning of 'Pyeng', as assigned by her mother) delivers the same risk-taking, soulful, transcendent qualities of "Sweet Home". "An artist with a point of view and the chops to bring it to life" (onefinalnote.com), Pyeng Threadgill is a name that's hard to forget and an artist who produces music for the ages.

12.07.07 | ALPER YILMAZ CD Release Party! Alper Yılmaz's debut release on Kayique Records features his multifaceted compositions which reflect the clashes and tensions sprung from his musical and intellectual journeys spread over geographies, spanning from United States to Turkey. Alper's music evolves from distinct repetitive themes—cinematic at times. Recorded with two different lineups, yet with the same instrumentation, "Clashes" brings together musicians from New York and Istanbul , each of whom is a master on his instrument, to a musical platform of free expression and improvisation. While the album has a strong statement and sound framed around Alper Yılmaz's compositions and bass playing, each musician's unique and versatile approach can be distinctly heard in "Clashes." Tonight's party is presented by non-profit cultural organization Moon and Stars Project (http://moonandstarsproject.org/)
Alper Yılmaz, electric basses, loops, effects, voice; Michael McGinnis, soprano saxophone, clarinet; David Binney, alto saxophone; Nick Kadajski, alto saxophone; Jon Davis, Rhodes; Matthias Bublath, Rhodes, keyboards; Andy Sanesi, drums; Volkan Öktem, drums

The Albany Times wrote, "Each of the movements had a distinctive character or groove, with much rhythmic invention and interesting harmonic wanderings, often the result of gently sliding counterpoint. While there was nothing that screamed "I'm trying to sound like rock music," the work was utterly contemporary and street-smart, and offered fine, idiomatic writing for strings."

Echoes of acoustic ragtime, Old-Time C & W, creaky carnival themes, early rock and roll (think Ricky Nelson), and R & B all swirl in and out of the mix. Quirky and precocious, they´re an anachronistic version of the sampling aesthetic which fuels alternative hip-hop — but they´re using upright bass, ukulele, fiddle, guitar, and kazoo rather than turntables and digital keyboards. It´s a like a mashup between The Mississippi Sheiks and Little House on The Prairie.” — Connect Savannah

11.09.07 | DOCTOR ROSEN ROSEN + TIPPY + DJ ARNI KRISTJANSSON + Special Guests Doctor Rosen Rosen is a Brooklyn based singer/producer who's innovative craftsmanship combines punchy g-funk style beats and dramatic melodies. Anchored by a soulful voice and forthright lyrics, this rogue-pop style is simultaneously reminiscent of Snoop Dog, Mike Patton, and Prince. ( myspace.com/drrosenrosenmusic)
Tippy's diminutive frame and pale, punk rock aesthetic hides a surprisingly compelling hip-hop artist. Tippy transforms herself on stage, emanating an intoxicating sensuality, as daring and contagious as her music itself. Seducing her audience with a lyricism that seesaws between vulnerability and sexual voracity, sweet flirtation and unabashed craving, its no wonder Tippy has built such a solid following with her recounts of Cali streets, late rendezvous, and good love gone bad. ( myspace.com/tippymusic)
Arni Kristjansson has made a name for himself in the Icelandic DJ scene as one of the most prolific and diverse DJs around. He has played all the major Icelandic venues as well as being a resident at club nights electronicpub and Nuphoria while stationed in Tokyo. Deeply influenced by brazilian music, hip hop, minimal techno, dubstep and broken beats, he is one of the most distinguished DJ talents to be found in the Arctic Circle. Whoever tells the hostess the sauciest kiss and tell secret of the night wins a fabulous prize. Seze is extremely excited about moving the party to Rose Live Music. As a composer and bandleader he furnishes an environment of maximum volatility and risk - an environment that creates an opportunity for fresh responses. 11:30PM - With rapier wit, stunning musicality and wacky stage antics, Eric Biondo a.k.a. Beyondo performs with music acts ranging from Antibalas to trancey-fusion jazz groups to Monkees reunions.. There's levity in Beyondo's material in a "space age bachelor pad" way, but Beyondo goes a step beyond. 10.24.07 | THE INBETWEENS + THOUGHT The Inbetweens emerged in the summer of 2002, from the roots of improvisation, curiosity, and like minds. They collectively weave melodies and vamps into intricate spiderwebs of rhythm. The trio circles each other like predators seeking the same prey, forcing the standard guitar trio format to walk the plank. Before they were the tweens, they lived in Boston, where they each spent time gigging and studying jazz at the New England Conservatory of Music with gurus such as Bob Moses, George Garzone, John Lockwood, and John Abercrombie. Since then Guitarist Mike Gamble, bassist Noah Jarrett, and drummer Conor Elmes have been performing bi-monthly as a trio in the NYC area and have put out three self-released albums. You can also hear the trio backing up the Brooklyn Qawwali Party, among many other NYC-based groups.
Male/Female intertwined vocals and horns with a power trio give Thought their distinctive sound. With influences from Pop-Rock to Afrobeat, they are known for their high-energy performances geared towards Dance. Tim Allen-electric guitar, PJ Boeckel- Electric Bass, Conor Elmes-drums, Lynn Ligammari-voice/saxophone, Michael Williams-voice/Bass Trumpet

Rather than simply arrange textures which the poems are read over, Sadigursky has actually set the poems to melody, surrounding each with lush musical arrangement while retaining the spontaneity and interaction of jazz. Inspired by the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of maracatu, Chico Science & the Mangue Beat movement, the NATION BEAT has created an incredible, fresh new sound. They transcend borders musically and literally. In 2005, with sponsorship by the Brazilian Department of Culture they became the first North American group to collaborate and record in Brazil with the legendary Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante led by Mestre Walter and rhythm master Jorge Martins. 10.10.07 | Grupo Los Santos ". . . [T]he only faith to which these four American musicians appear to devote themselves is the impassioned and serious investigation of traditional Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, in order to incorporate them into their own jazz-based compositions. These interpretive experiments have succeeded in creating a mix at times explosive and sizzling, like the Brazilian coastline or Afrocaribbean flavor. . . others exude melodies that produce that certain languid sensation which beckons us to more intimate places." -Diana Vargas, VIDAHOY (NY)
